Multimodal Transportation
Sep 24, 2026
A transportation plan can look perfect on paper and still become difficult when business picks up. A manufacturer may normally dispatch a few containers every week. Then a new order comes in, production increases and suddenly there is much more cargo to move. During festive seasons, export orders can rise as well. At other times, demand can slow down just as quickly. For logistics teams, the challenge is not only finding transport. It is finding enough capacity without pushing up costs or delaying deliveries. This is where multimodal transportation can give businesses some breathing room. Instead of putting the entire journey on one mode, different modes can be used for different legs of the movement.

Ask someone to choose a port for an export shipment and there is a good chance the first thing they will check is the distance. It is understandable. If one port is 250 km away and another is 450 km away, why send the container farther? Because the shortest road journey is not necessarily the shortest logistics journey. A container may reach the nearby port quickly and then wait for a vessel. There could be limited sailings for the required destination, higher handling costs or delays in moving the container. Meanwhile, the port that looked less attractive on the map may have a better sailing schedule and a smoother road or rail connection. This is something worth considering when looking at the major ports in India. Port selection is less about finding the nearest dot on a map and more about finding a route that works from the factory to the final customer.

A delay of one day does not sound like a big deal until you start adding up what that day has cost. The truck has been waiting. The container is still sitting at a terminal. A planned rail movement has been missed. The vessel cut-off is getting closer. Someone from the logistics team is now making calls to find out what can be done. By the time the shipment is moving again, there may be several extra costs attached to it. This is something many businesses learn only after handling a few delayed shipments. The freight rate you agree to at the beginning is not necessarily the final cost of moving the goods. In cargo shipping, time has a cost too.

Most importers do not choose a bad container shipping company because they are careless. They choose one because the quotation looks good, the sailing schedule looks acceptable, and the service appears similar on paper.

Manufacturing margins can disappear long before a product reaches the customer. A delayed raw-material truck can stop a production line. Poor container planning can increase port-related costs. An avoidable transshipment can turn an apparently cheap freight quote into an expensive shipment.
